The Claude Certified Associate – Foundations exam (CCAO-F) checks whether you use Claude at work with good judgment. It is not a technical exam: the guide says you need no coding or API experience. Its largest domain, at 21% of the 60 questions, is checking what Claude gives you before you use it.
The exam takes 120 minutes and costs $99, the cheapest of the 4 Claude certifications. The pass is a scaled 720 out of 1,000, and each question says how many answers to choose. It is meant for analysts, marketers, project managers, teachers, consultants and others who use Claude every day, and it is not meant for developers. Only staff of Claude Partner Network organisations can register, and it is the one Claude certification that does not count toward a partner firm's tier. Our comparison of the 4 Claude exams explains both points.
The 7 domains
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Output evaluation and validation | 21% |
| Workflow integration and solution design | 16% |
| Governance, risk and responsible use | 15% |
| Prompting and task execution | 14% |
| Product and model selection | 12% |
| Configuration and knowledge management | 12% |
| Troubleshooting and optimization | 10% |
Prompting, which most people expect to lead, is 14%. Checking output and governance together are 36%.
3 habits the questions reward
The guide's 3 sample questions each test a habit, and the wrong answers are the shortcuts people take.
Verify before you send. Claude summarises a regulation and cites a subsection number with confidence. The right move is to check that subsection in the official text. Asking Claude to rate its own confidence is a distractor: a model can make up a precise-looking citation, and its confidence does not tell you whether it did.
Match the model to the job. For a high volume of short customer replies where speed and cost matter, a faster, cheaper model is right. The top model is for hard reasoning, not for everything.
Clean the data before it goes in. A spreadsheet holds customer names and account numbers, and policy restricts personal data. Remove or anonymise the identifiers, then upload. Telling Claude not to keep the file does not satisfy the policy, and skipping the analysis is not needed.
If you remember one rule, make it this one: when an answer relies on Claude promising to behave, look for the one that puts a control in place instead.
Which feature for which job
Product and model selection is 12% and configuration another 12%, so you need to know what each feature is for. These are the ones the guide names, as Anthropic's help pages describe them today:
| You need to | Use | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Keep instructions and files for one piece of ongoing work | A Project | Files and instructions apply to every chat in it, and each project keeps its own memory. On paid plans, large project knowledge switches to retrieval so more fits |
| Answer a question that needs many sources | Research | It runs searches that build on each other and can use your connectors. On mobile it searches only the web |
| Produce something you will hand to someone | An artifact | A document, deck, dashboard or small tool. It needs code execution and file creation switched on in settings |
| Work with your own email or files | A connector, such as Google Drive or Gmail | Once connected, Claude can read and act in that service, so connect only what the task needs |
| Carry on a long conversation | The same chat, or a fresh one with a summary | Near the limit, Claude summarises earlier messages to make room. Start fresh when the old detail no longer matters |
What has changed since the guide
The guide is version 1.0 from July 2026. Two things have moved since:
- Projects are changing. Anthropic is testing a new version of Projects in which a project is one conversation that Claude splits into parallel threads running in the cloud. It started with Claude Code for some Pro and Max users, and chat, Team and Enterprise come later. The exam's Projects are the current kind, with instructions and a knowledge base.
- Models. The guide compares Haiku, Sonnet and Opus. Anthropic now also offers Claude Fable 5.1 for the hardest reasoning. The exam's principle stays the same: the smallest model that does the job well.
How to prepare
Use Claude for your actual work for 2 or 3 weeks with the exam's habits in mind. Build a Project for one ongoing task with instructions and reference files. Connect one source, run one research task, and make one artifact. Each time Claude gives you a fact, a figure or a citation, check it against the source; that one habit covers the biggest domain. The prompt engineering and hallucination concept pages cover the vocabulary the questions use.
Then try the free Associate – Foundations practice questions, written to the guide's 7 domains. If you start building on the API later, the Developer – Foundations guide is the next step.
Questions
- How do I prepare for the Claude Certified Associate – Foundations exam?
- Use Claude for real work every day for a few weeks: set up a Project with instructions and files, connect a source such as Google Drive, run a research task, and check what comes back against the original. The largest domain, at 21%, is evaluating and validating Claude's output, so practise catching wrong citations and made-up details. No coding or API knowledge is needed.
- Do I need to code for the Claude Associate certification?
- No. The guide says no software development or API experience is needed. The exam is for people who use Claude as a productivity tool, such as analysts, marketers, project managers and consultants.
- How many questions are on the CCAO-F exam?
- 60 multiple-choice and multiple-response items in 120 minutes. Each item says how many answers to pick. The pass mark is a scaled 720 on a scale of 100 to 1,000.
- How much does the Claude Associate Foundations exam cost?
- $99 per attempt, the cheapest of the 4 Claude certifications. The credential lasts 12 months, and renewing on time is a free assessment.
- Does the Claude Associate certification count toward a partner's tier?
- No. It is the one Claude certification that does not count toward a Claude Partner Network organisation's tier, so check whether your employer pays for it before you book.
- Who can sit the exam?
- Only people at organisations in the Claude Partner Network, registering with a company email on a domain in their organisation's partner record.
